A privately owned reserve atop the Continental Divide, Monteverde protects six different wildlife communities on both the Caribbean and Pacific slopes. The cloud forest's most famous flying resident is the resplendant quetzal, considered by many to be the most beautiful bird in the world. There are at least 400 other bird species, including the balibird, not easily seen but frequently heard, over 100 species of mammals and an etimated 2500 species of plants. What you see most is dense, dripping vegetation, with majestic trees, ferns, bromeliads, vines, mosses and more than 300 species of orchids. |
