Hi- I'm living in monteverde, and I am planning to drive up to Nicxaragua for a few days to see Granada. I've been told I need to acquire a "Permiso de Salida del Pais" for my car from the Regsitro Nacional in order to do so. Does anyone have any idea how this works? I'm told I can get this at an office inside the BCR in Puntarenas, and maybe at a Banco-CR in Liberia on the way to Nicaragua. None of the guidebooks mention anything about this... any guidance would be VERY helpful!------------------ Scott |

Scotty,I have driven the entire pan american highway. In my experience, all the papers and docments you will need to leave or enter a country should be at the border stops. apart from these, you need your passport and all the legal documents for the car you will be driving. leaving CR will be easy, and so will be entering nicaragua. The hard part (not really hard...just takes time) is getting into costa rica. the lines are long, and i ran into about a 4 hour line at penas blancas the last time. if there is a tour bus full of people...they jump ahead of you in line and get preference...Which is frustrating. suerte. |

Hi- I think I've gotten my question answered. There does indeed appear to be a requirement for a CR registered vehicle to obtain a "Permiso Salida del Pais," which can be acquired at offices of the Registro Nacional. for anyone needing one, in Guanacaste, the office is upstairs from the Banco Costa Rica (BCR) in Libereia on the Parque Central. You need your Passport, all the standard papers for your car (title, registration, etc.), and a "Certificado Literal" (another document that I'm not sure of the significance of, but it is purchaseable at Liberia Robaco in Liberia). I'm sure there is a fee as well, and then you should be provided with your Permiso, and you are ready for the border. I'm told the Permiso is good for 90 days, but I'm not sure until I actually get one... Thanks for the help- Scott |
