Firstly: luck you moving to Costa Rica. Beautiful place, fantastic people. Just the right blend of western civilisation and developing country charm.

I don't know about the laws, although I expect they are very severe on paper. However, all CR laws are severe on paper (you can have your car confiscated for speeding), but as the police can collect fines these things can be negotiated.

I've been to CR about 7 times over the past 7 years and have never had problems getting hold of excellent weed. I know lots of locals, including high school students, and no one seems at all concerned about being caught.
Enjoy yourselves. When you're getting higjh in the sun, please just spare a thought for me stuck here in Beijing!

So I was in Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean coast and weed was being sold all the time and it is smoked everywhere like cigs, it almost seemed legal, but im sure it isnít. I would take extra precaution as with any drug, but donít stress too much. See what others do and follow them. I also saw that the police were often bribed and took it smiling. I also heard from locals that it was illegal for police to search a womanís body, so if you kept it in your bra or bikini top it would be best.....I donít know if its the same for female cops though. Well good luck and enjoy...oh yeah, keep your sister safe when buying from dealers, donít be stupid!

In 1999 a friend of mine bought and sold some weed in Jaco. He was having a great time but partied with what turned out to be an american DEA agent. When he returned to the US he was arrested for breaking the law in America. The reason was to help the US track drug trafficers. Some crap huh. He did 3 years fed time. Again, in Jan 2000, an expat that lived on the beach at Zancudo was fishing off shore and the US coast guard searched his boat not 300 yards off the shore line. He had 2 oz and they sent him to a cutter and then to the us charged with possession to distribute to the US because he was an american. I don't know about the Costarican Laws I have seen them tear up houses and incarcerate for drugs but I think it is more because someone is mad at the other and set them up. If you find resident North Americans that can hook you up use them. Don't trust a tico and don't flant it.
Sooner or later the CR Gov will crack down and it will be hard. You will not like a CR jail. Don't be stupid. The DEA is alive and well in CR.

All times are CT
