we have been researching a possible move to CR. Besides being careful of investment scams, which would not be a problem for us, I do have a concern about crime. We believed that violent crime was not a serious concern in CR (except in areas of San Jose). However, what I am constantly seeing lately is higher crime, "dont go to Puntarenas", "even so called safe parking lots etc are not safe", and that obvious newbies like us are charged a lot more for goods and services (this is a crime to me, theft by innocence/lack of experience is still theft) I am troubled by these stories. I dont want to move to CR to exploit any one or resources. I want to move to CR because the country appears to be less consumer driven and more thoughtful of the general public as their "PEOPLE".
Am I being mislead about this concept so that I will go there for long vacation to check it out and be sucked dry for every penny I have worked hard to save?
dont want to be disillusioned!

What do you mean by real estate fraud
would not be a problem? The reason I ask is
that is my worry, especially the organized
squatters that can cause substantial problems, even to the point of the owner
having to sell their propertie and relinquish the rights to squatters.

Yes, squatters is a new concept. We plan to rent for an extended period before we even think about buying. I have learned that even to rent one must research the place a lot. so be it. Will do, I will have a list of questions with me. Fortunately my husband is experienced with wiring, plumbing. We may hire someone to help us with the first rental. (or buy). Our goal is to be fluent enough in Spanish to be independant of such help eventually. I am thinking that living in or near an area such as santa ana may be a good first choice. I am interested in the whole country but am learning to pull back and try to concentrate on a specific area at a time.
