Let me just shed some light on life in Costa Rica. I am a US citizen, and a first generation american of Costa Rican heritage. All my life I have traveled to CR, spending most summers there since early childhood. I have found that the Costa Rica I remembered from my childhood simply has changed into something else. It has become more commercial, more focused on tourism than before. People here have been complaining about life in CR, and I happen to beleive that it is Tourism itself that has corrupted Costa Rican culture, business, and way of life. I'm not saying that tourism is wrong; every country needs it, and it is great for the economy. Yet since the late 80's, when large numbers of Americans began to buy a great amount of real estate, some of the country's culture has been changed into something that I am no longer comfortable with. What's more, it is these american companies tha have been taking away the tourist industry from the natives, creating private and exclusive beaches, which never existed before. Basically life has changed ever since people began to look at Costa Rica as a resort country rather than a nation with deep culture. I agree with many of the posts here: Costa Rica has many aspects that are unattractive. But we should really ask why such things exists there. The way it is now is not how it has always been. I wish some of you could have experienced the Costa Rica I knew, and still love. |

I agree that tourism has the negative consequences you list, but Costa Rica is still a wonderful place. MacDonaldization is everywhere including Costa Rica. The surfer guy would have had the same experience in Miami, New Orleans, Orlando, Panama City, Padre etc. His main complaint was that people didn't sell themselves cheap enough--a credit to Costa Rica in my opinon. |
