Hi my name is Isaac E. Pacheco. I have several questions about employing a Costarican. I have been reserching for a while about employment is Costa Rica and I found that I have to give an employment oportunity to ticos if I own my business. I woulkd like if someone can adress me on the right direction to find out information about wages in Costa Rica, meaning how much is it the minimum wage, how much does an employee should get paid for his or her job.
Thank you for your time.

I am presuming that you are an American Citizen, or at least, not a citizen of Costa Rica. The very best advice that I can give you is that you need to consult a good CR attorney, before you hire anyone, and he/she can advise as to what you need to do in order to comply with all the labor laws of CR, including minimum wage info, etc........

You can hire any tico here. They are hard workers and responsable. But never, never, try to use lies to take their money off as some Colombians and Chinese people do.

There are awful experiences of foreigners coming to Costa Rica recruiting ticos and offend the Political Constitution of Costa Rica with low wages, not complitting with the Social Guaranties ruled by law. At last, if they want the employee to be fired or simply they do not need their service anymore, use lies such as :He/she stole me, he/she is a lazy, always get late; etc.

The Labor Bureau is full of these lawsuits.

If you are an honorable american or latino citizen, please start the things well from the beginning, and do not cheat our workers. In exchange, I ensure you that you will get the best people to work and happy to enhance your business whichever it is.

Have nice day!

by the way, I have a book titled The Legal Guide To Costa Rica for sale. I suggest you to visit my site www.contactocostarica.net

Both jdocop and ContactCR are correct. The Costa Rican labor laws are very complicated but a lot of the rules are based on their Constitution. Treat them right it seems all workers here know the rules better than some attornies. Defineately you need an attorney to help you draw up your employment policies. Also loyal employees can further you reputation, which is very important here as Ticos like to do business with someone they know.
