I'll be traveling to your fair country for the first time in February. I'll be renting a car and was wondering if my hand held GPS (garmin e-trex) will work down there, and it would be a total bonus if I can listen to my XM radio while cruising around. Anybody know?

I would suggest that you check with your providers for these services. I seriously doubt that XM is a worldwide service. As for GPS, I really have no idea how it works, but if there is a paid service involved, it most likely will not work outside the US. If it is truly a "Global Positioning System," then, I would imagine it will still work. My question would be whether or not it has to scan for a specific satellite, or not.....

There are mixed reports on satellite radio.
You Etrex will work fine. I have waypoints for much of the country or you can download them from Google Earth.

Thanks for the info. I'm glad the GPS will work. I did check on XM's website and I guess that's not going to fly. What should I expect from local radio stations? Is there a good selection of stations to choose from? Or should I pack a bunch of CDs?

Thanks valeame. I'm going to be arriving fairly early (1:00 pm) on Thursday, so if I have any problems with mine, it will give me a chance to rent one. I know mine won't have any roads or local features built into it, but I think the 'etch-a-sketch' feature might come in handy if I get lost somewhere.

Driving in Costa Rica is very difficult because of the mountains and very few of the roads are named or numbered, as I am sure that you have heard. This GPS maps you pretty close, despite the mountains and twists. Good luck.

Just got back last night and had the time of my life! As it turns out, most of the roads and nearly all of the towns in all of Costa Rica are pre-programed into the Etrex's at the factory. Holy Crap did that make life easier! When I turned it on and saw all that stuff, it was like seeing Jesus! I'd still be driving circles around Santa Elena if not for that wonderfull device. It's the one and only thing the U.S. military has done right in the past 20 years.

....and I forgot to mention - plenty of "Classico rock de los estados uniditos" (or however you'd spell it)So you can pretty much leave your CDs at home too.

Hey, Green-go. I am about to go to Costa Rica and I would like to use the same GPS as you used since you had such a great experience. However, I wasn't able to find any information about the Garmin E-Trex on Garmin's website. It said the product was discontinued. Do you know anything about that? If it indeed has been discontinued, do you have any suggestions for other products or anything? I hope to hear from you soon. Thanks for your time.

elinterprete: Since he says it was preprogrammed into his device, I would assume every Garmin GPS comes with this. All their models appear to come with a "built in world basemap." If you read their site, all models say something similar to: "Colorado 300 comes with a built-in worldwide basemap with shaded relief..."
