Hi Merlin! We have used the Grand Vitara and Terios as well as a Rav4...our last car was a Terios..very satisfied, enough room for 3 adults with 6 large suitcases and 2 small. We did use the roof rack, (brought rope and big black plastic bags for the rain, it worked great! We were going for a month and staying in one spot..so we had everything with us, sheets, towels, etc, because it was just an empty cabina, but anyhow, the Terios was very reliable and good on gas ($) and we drove it all over the country. Good luck!

The Vitara is a bit more comfortable but needs more gas. With a Terios you will get everywhere you want to in Costa Rica, it's just smaller. If you are more than 3 persons then the Terios is too small.

We recently came back from CR and drove around extensively. We were two adults and two children. We were up in the mountains, on muddy dirt roads and everywhere in between. We had a Terios and I believe it could go anywhere the Vitara or any other SUV could go. Only thing, it's SMALL. Think small and you'll still be surprized at the size when you see it!! 2 adults, 2 children and 4 large duffel bags and it was FULL! Next visit we will definitely opt for something a little bigger. If you are planning to drive around a lot, you want to be comfortable. If it is only going to be two of you, the Terios will be perfect. It is cheaper on rental and gas.
