My husband & I are visiting Mal Pais for our honeymoon and we have never been to Costa Rica. We are going the end of this month and I curious of how bad the insects are right now? Should we be packing certain repellents? Also I have read that you shouldn't leave things in your vehicles. Does that go for everywhere or just touristy towns? My husband rented a vehicle for that reason. Is there zip line tours close to Mal Pais? I'm just concerned for our safety cause it seems that my husband is so excited that he has totally forgot about it. Any advise anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there. I am so excited for you guys! We were in CR for two weeks in January and among others spent several days in Santa Theresa/Mal Pais. First of all, the roads are unbelievably bad to get there. In fact it is a dirt road. Every so often you will encounter a patch of paved road, so this at one point was a paved road, but not anymore! It is extreme dusty because of the dirt roads. I don't know if you guys will enjoy Mal Pais, but My family and I loved it. The beach is great, the food is good and the people are friendly. It also is extremely hot there (for someone who grew up in South Africa, it has to be really hot to mention it!) The fishing is great, if you guys are into it. Our first night there we were woken up by the scariest sound I have ever heard and my kids were terrified. Come to find out the next day that it is howler monkeys! They were very loud every night and sound huge, but we got used to the noise. I cannot stress enough that you honestly SHOULD NOT LEAVE ANYTHING in the car, or on the beach! Travel light, carry as little as possible with you so you don't have to leave anything in the car or with the towels on the beach. Our friends were driving a truck imported from the US. One day the guys and kids went snorkeling, parked the truck right next to where they were snorkeling. 15 minutes later, without anyone seeing anything, the whole door lock was broken out and my husband's watch and a camera were stolen from the truck! It was unfortunate, but you will absolutely love CR. While there, you can just drive around and find the most beautiful coves and little beaches everywhere. Take time to go to Montezuma (it's very close). It is such a cute little town, very touristy and everything is overpriced, but is a very cool little town. We travel often and CR is without a doubt near the top of my favorite places in the world to travel to. You cannot compare first world Europe to Central America, but if you love nature and just simple life, you will be in heaven in CR. You are welcome to e-mail me directly if you have any more questions, e-mail marcel93@msn.com and my name is Judy.
