We plan to go to the caribbean side and stay in Puerto Viejo. However, we would like to see the volcano and stay one night there. How far away is Arenal from San Jose and how long of a drive is it? Just trying to figure out our timeline.Your help is much appreciated!!! ------------------ |

Arenal is NOT the only volcano in CR! Very close to San Jose is Poas, which has an opportunity to look down into the crater, something you will never do with Arenal....... |

It all depends on what you like! The whole Poas experience can really be superior, the lovely drive to the crater with beautiful countyside and fields of flowers and strawberries, the crisp COOL air (can't do that in Arenal), The hiking trails and park itself around Poas IS superior, ask any hiker. Better wildlife opportunities as well. No Fireworks at Poas, but you can't ALWAYS see it at Arenal either. anyhow, don't sell Poas short! It's a first rate volcanic experience! tucana |

Hmmmm. Definitely something to think about. Does anyone know (on average) how often the volcano erupts? Different times of the year better than others? I would like to see the fire works, but thanks for the other idea guys. ------------------ |
