I will be visiting CR with my 15 year old son in mid august. I know its the rainy season but that was when we could go. We are staying at the Marriot in San Jose. I am hoping that we can take day trips from there so we wont have to stay anywhere else given the weather and other factors. Will it be possible to get to the major sites from there? I realize one or two of the day trips could be very long days but I would love to go to the volcano and the turtle park since that is something that is supposed to be best in August. Any thoughts? We are both very good travelers. |

I fear that you are less than well-informed about what to do, and where to go....there are more than one volcano to go see. and, the beaches where tourists go to see the nesting turtles are not within a day trip distance of San Jose. Best ones would take one day to get to, a day to see the turtles, and another day to get back to San Jose. Finally, I would not every recommend staying in San Jose to a tourist. Instead, look into booking a hotel near to Liberia (flying into that airport, instead of San Jose), and that way you'll be close to many beaches, and even then, you would need a full day to get to a volcano......maybe Tenorio.......but, probably not Arenal..... |

Hi Deb. I think what JD says is good info, however on my first visit, 2 years ago, we stayed at the Marriott in San Jose for 3 nights and had a blast. We also drove to Los Suenos and spent a few days there and that too was wonderful. Both of these hotels are 5 star quality and have great pools, restaurants and hotel staff. There are definately better bargains but this is a great indoctrination to the beauty of Costa Rica. The hotel can help you find an honest taxi/tour driver to take you around. There is a volcano near San Jose, called Paos. Near there, are also the beautiful waterfalls called La Paz. In San Jose there is a great museum to show the history and the National Theater building is beatiful to see inside. The city is safe, just be smart. I live in Miami and feel safer in downtown San Jose than in downtown Miami! The Marriott in San Jose is not really in the downtown San Jose area. Look at this web site for some information.... http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g309293-d447017-Reviews-Costa_Rica_Marriott_Hotel_San_Jose-San_Jose_Province_of_San_Jose.html You can also find some information there about tours and things to do within a days drive. There are tours available to many different locations. Enjoy! Dave |

Let me try to clean this horrible post up a bit: I fear that you are lacking a clear understanding of just what is in CR, and places to go, and things to do (which is not to say that this is in any way your fault). (OK, now I feel a little better). |

Thanks for the input so far. It is helpful. I have already booked the airline tickets in and out of San Jose so I am not going to change that. I will look into perhaps changing the hotel for a few days to get closer to a couple of the sights. I am not so concerned about being close to the beaches I was interested in the turtles which looks like its not very close to anything and the volcanos ( i am aware there are more than one) but there are a whole miriad of other things we could do that I am pretty sure are doable from the hotel which I know is actually outside of San jose. I am sure that we will find plenty to do. thanks again for the input |

I'm going to August too. Independently planning the whole trip for 10 people. I wouldn't worry about the rain. It might rain and it might not. It might rain all day and it might rain only for an hour. The way I see it is just go prepared and don't let it stop a great adventure! Our family is flying into San Jose too, but we are only staying one night and, from what I researched, you want to go stay in other places. We're heading to Tortuguero for 4 nights (where the turtles are) and staying in the small town. Why keep yourself in San Jose when you can go experience the culture, wildlife, and adventure of a new country? In total we are staying at 4 different places in two weeks: Cahuita, Tortuguero, Ciudad Quesada, and Monteverde. I must say I am a traveler who likes to experience the culture and off the beaten path adventures- but I think you should consider traveling around a bit! And you don't have to rent a car- I arranged for all private transportation from place to place. I'd be happy to offer you any more advice |

I am so happy I found this forum. I've been overwhelmed with trying to plan a trip to Costa Rica in August. I'm wondering how one arranges for private transportation? Would it be better to fly into Liberia or San Jose? Any suggestions and tips are welcome! |

The selection of airport depends on a couple variables. Where are most of your planned activities? If you are concentrating on Guanacaste beaches, Arenal Volcano, Monteverde, then Liberia Airport. If you are going to the Central Valley, Manuel Antonio, Jaco, or the Caribbean..then San Jose airport would be the best choice. Also, be advised, generally speaking, air fare is higher to Liberia.... |
