Hello members, especially dac8555 (you seem to be very knowledgable about CR). My husband and I will be vacationing in CR for a week, arriving in San Jose going to El Roble, Puntarenas on September 6th afternoon flight arrival (1:40 pm). How long will be our travel (hours?) to reach Fiesta Hotel in Puntarenas? Would you advise for us to take a public transportation? Or travel on a rental car from San Jose airport? Do you advise a rental car with a GPS? And will it be safe to drive? Feeling anxious, so please advise. THANKS anyone, everyone for your prompt reply. |

It should not take too long to get to Puntarenas from the airport (which is not really in San Jose, but that is another story). How is your Spanish? If you are comfortable with it, take a bus (and, you can get all the info you need online about which bus, where to catch it, and so forth), and you'll have fun. If not, go for a rental car, and ask for a map (or, get one online before you leave the states, or wherever). I would imagine you should be able to get down to Puntarenas within less than two hours, depending on heavy the truck/bus traffic is coming down the hills, out of San Jose. GPS is not really needed for such a short trip, as this particular route is pretty straight forward (there are plenty of road signs giving distance to)....... |

I can speak about 40% Spanish. Thanks for your advise. Did you have other texts? I didn't know how to forward if your reply was cut off from the screen (where you had dot..dot..dot..). Just registered last night. Thanks again. Q: Have you heard of Hotel Fiesta in El Roble, Puntarena? What do we see from there? We will be headquartered there. Do we rent a car from the hotel? Shall we rent a guide day to day? Does the guide have a car to take us? When we want to go around the town, do we take a bus? Or then rent a car for a few days? You know how uninformed we are at this point. T-h-a-n-k-s again. |

Fiesta Resort in Puntarenas is now a Doubletree (Hilton product) It is a very nice full service resort with several pools and lots of activities. At one time it had a casino as well. You might look into taking the big Catamaran trip (Calypso, it is a one day excursion into the gulf of Nicoya and highly recommended as well as not too expensive. I would suggest renting a car (making your best deal in advance---check all the sites) There is not a lot to see in the town of Puntarenas..it is a typical port city...but having a car will give you freedom to explore out a bit. |

You asked: Have you heard of Hotel Fiesta in El Roble, Puntarena? My reply: No, I have never heard of it. Personally, imho, Puntarenas is worth visiting only during the Carnival, which usually takes places sometime around Feb/Mar. And, then, for me, only worth day trips. I wouldn't want to stay overnight there. You asked: What do we see from there? My reply: Obviously, I have no idea, but what I know about Puntarenas is that it is a port city, not a typical touristy place with beautiful beaches, etc. You asked: Do we rent a car from the hotel? You asked: Shall we rent a guide day to day? My reply: What for? I have never wanted or felt the need to have a guide. You asked: Does the guide have a car to take us? My reply: I have no idea. I've never used a guide.
My reply: Obviously, if you are renting a car, you would not need to take a bus. Puntarenas is not that big a town, and I really don't believe you will find such a thing as local bus service. It is only about one mile from the tip of the sand spit that makes up the town, to the mainland. |

Many thanks, jdocop, mark_o, Tucana. You had great answers. We will be stuck staying in one hotel because we got it through time share for a week. It seems that we will reserve a rental car for CR use. Thanks again! |

Roper, just a small suggestion: since Ticoshuttle gave you his link, you should take your cost related questions directly to him, via his link, rather than expose your potential business plans, etc. on a worldwide forum. |
