Never been to CR, but I'm planning on coming down in November or January for several weeks. Looking for a way to stay cheap. Probably don't want to camp in a tent-but I guess I would consider anything. Be nice to be near a beach, and will be traveling inland to for kayaking, hiking etc. Any thoughts? I'm a (former) science and middle school teacher, trustworthy, and even willing to trade my skills. I may even take some Spanish lessons. Any thoughts? I just can't afford to pay/stay in a hotel for three weeks. |

There are a number of hostels scattered around the country, and a lot of places that simply offer a bed, cheaply (you'll see signs on buildings, or along the road). Unfortunately, a good grasp of basic Spanish would greatly assist you in finding such places. However, I bet if you're as adventurous as your post indicates, you will not only find places to sleep, but enjoy the experience at the same time! Best hint I can think of is to stay off the beaten path, avoid formal "tour groups," and ask lots of questions. Ticos are very friendly, and do readily provide directions (but, they also tend to tell you what they think you want to hear, rather than what you really need to hear). Go, see, enjoy! |

For your cheapest option you should look into renting an apartment for a month. I'm not sure what your budget is, but you may be able to find something on Craigslist Costa Rica. Otherwise, once you find a town that you like, I'd go check out the local grocery store where you might find a bulletin board posting apartments for rent. That way you may come across a real cheap place. In Playas del Coco, where I lived for a year between '06-'07 you could sometimes find a tiny place for $150-250 for a month. Often it's a small place with some what spartan conditions, but if you're living on the cheap it works! Also, check with local businesses like a dive shop or tour company, often they will know someone who knows someone who has a place to rent. Finding cheap places is often a factor of who you ask and who you know. Best of luck! ------------------ |
