Planning a trip to Costa Rica starting around December 16, 2008 and ending possibly March 16, 2009. Considered Plan includes taking a 10 day Caravan "Costa Rica Natural Paradise" tour on 12/16 or 12/17 with a friend. Would really prefer something other that a big bus tour! Friend leaves shortly after tour, and I would hopefully temporarily rent (12/24 or 12/25 through ??) an Aparthotel, hotel or something for a few days in an effort to locate an apartment or other lodging in San Jose from December ? through February 15, 2009, and then relocate to an area on the Pacific from February 16th through March 15th. I am a first time visitor, non-Spanish speaking, yount 63 year old male. My questions are: 1. Can you recommend an reasonable alternative to the Caravan Tour ($1,095 plus $179 taxes and fees per person) that will in ten days allow us to visit both Tortuguero and Manuel Antonia Parks, arenal vocano, cloud forest, and other attractions? Most everything I read down plays driving tours and because of the approaching holiday season, I'm uncertain if all arrangements could be made timely. 2. Where would you recommend I attempt my short stay (days)in the San Jose area which is both reasonable, clean, and within walking distance of the major city attractions? Suggestions and recommended contacts would be appreciated. 3. What is my best source for locating a place to stay during my extended visit to the San Jose area (approx 1 1/2 months)? Most apartments appear to require extended leases. Suggestions and recommended contacts would be appreciated. 4. What city/area on the Pacific coast would you recommend I attempt to stay in during my month long stay there? What would be my best source for locating a place to stay? Suggestions and recommended contacts would be appreciated. 5. Any other helpful hints would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. |

Hope this may help, with bias excused I'll go in order 1. Forget the Caravan tour unless you are unable to drive, just take out the insurance for that time of year unless you plan to go off road a plain two wheel drive will get you to almost anything.Just don't leave stuff unattended. For the that kind of money I would personally take you all over the country just pay my food bill. Spend the first night somewhere near the airport just in case your luggage doesn't make it esp. if you have close connections, the drive back will chew up at least one day and it gives you an easy drive. You will understand this only after you experience driving here. The taxi/buses are also a cheap alternative I live part year near Lake Arenal and travel down regularly Accomadations should not be a problem this year due to economics. 2. Think twice about staying in SanJose unless expense is not a problem but walking any where in the city as a tourist invites trouble/hassle/hustle. For what its worth they are many places just outside the city, take a cab where you wish to go.Sorry just don't like cities other than leaving them. 3 Can not help with this one but have friends who could, 4 Stay away from the "hot spots" crime and to many yahoo types who you wanted to get away from any. Depends on budget and taste but trying to find something that will work over the internet is tricky, just go there and see and meet. I love the La Cruz area for its lack of people and fishing as well as the Parrita area south of Jaco, too many to list. Unless you are certified beachnut the coast is hot you may think about a different setting to base out of. I think you can PM me for more info. Be glad to help |
