the rule of thumb that you need to remember about CR in regard to purchases is:

Products are more expensive
Services are cheaper.

IF you buy furniture that is made domestically, it is reasonable...if not purchased in a touristy area. but not cheap.

If you buy name breand furniture that has been imported, it will cost more (i dont know what the tax is on furniture) due to the import taxes. there is also a 13% sales tax.

i have a small 2 br house (1000 sq ft) and we bought columbian applewood furniture last year. pretty nice stuff.

prices were about..

bed:$800
mattress: $400
TV thing: $300
nice dining room table $300table with 4 chairs :$500
Wine cabinet:$600
Cabinet for plates:$600
Island style sutting board with wheels:$130

not great, but not bad,

If u need fine furniture go Artisca.

If ok furniture go Tibas, infront of the Pizza Hut there's a Muebleria Miranda. If u pay cash, they will give u discount.

hi everyone,
There is an option you may consider about buying furnitures in CR.
If you need not too expensives things, you should try native woodworkers in Alajuela.
They make the most, of the beautiful furnitures you can see at Sarchi area, but prices are much better for same quality.

Good luck

We just got back from furnishing our home in CR and went to Artistica in San Jose. THey were reasonably priced (about the same as here) and they have an enormous selection. We got a couch & love seat (faux suede) just like the ones we have here for $1,200.00 (for both). They had some less expensive stuff too but I'd say the prices they offer are similar to what you'd find in the states. They will also deliver to anywhere in the country. We took ours with us as we had a pick up truck. We bought our dining set - large table with 6 chairs from a local shop in Tileran for $300.00. Not real hardwood but nice for the price. We also were able to buy a brand new refrigerator for $400.00, and a bed for @ $300.00 (included matress).

Find a woodworking shop and have it made.
As in the M-pyre, the middlemen make all of the cash.
I designed all of my own and built some myself as well as having Roger Sanchez and Arturo Murillo of Tilaran make a lot of it.
Sarchi is garbage and a ripoff for the most part. There are a few good pieces there.
Use either Cedar (cedro) or Guanacaste wood and it'll last forever. There are GREAT upholsters here as well.Drapes, bedspreads...whatever. can be made. I have a super nice tablecloth that cost me a total of $22. It would have been a couple hundred in the US of Bush.

""...Why does every one feel they have to knock Bush?..."

If you really have to ask, then the answer wouldn't matter. I'd vote for Ron Paul, since he obviously isn't afraid to speak the truth. But then, he probably doesn't care that much about furniture either, which you can find in Sarchi - an artesans community above Grecia. Some really nice native hardwood stuff up there. (period, Buck Fush)...

A lot of us are living in Costa Rica BECAUSE of GWB and what he did to this country. Let's hope the idiots who "elected" this dumbo have enough sense NOT to vote for that war monger, otherwise we will have a junta!
